Faery Tales Author Awards Young Readers

Melanie J Firth met with the young people of Barnsley who had spent their summer completing the ‘Mythical Maze’ reading challenge. A celebratory event was held at Worsbrough Library, where the children were commended for their achievements.

Melanie said, “I was honoured to be asked to present certificates and medals to youngsters who had passed the challenge and read a large number of books over a short period of time. It is wonderful to see so many children engaging with literature as a hobby and choosing to read for the sheer passion and enjoyment of it.”

Melanie spoke to numerous guests at the library about her own book, ‘The Faery Tale of Rosie Quartz,’ signed personal copies, and answered questions about faeries, magic and being a writer.

The Barnsley Chronicle newspaper covered the event, and there were of course cakes, buns and other sweet treats to be enjoyed by all.

“Worsbrough is such a lovely and intimate community library,” says Melanie. “There is a tremendous atmosphere there, promoting the positive ethos of reading. Sadly there are not as many places like this left as there used to be, so I’m really keen to develop my working relationship with Worsbrough, and other small local libraries in South Yorkshire. As authors, teachers and parents we have a job to do in ensuring that young people continue to use libraries and see the importance of them.”
