Today marks the start of the Spring Equinox, a very important time in Faery Land. If you have read ‘The Faery Tale of Rosie Quartz’ you will already know how sacred all of the eight Sabbats are to the faeries and each occasion throughout the year is celebrated with music, feasting and dancing. The Spring Equinox, also known as ‘Ostara’ is a period of perfect balance between daylight and darkness. It comes just before the days start to get longer than the nights on our earthly calendars. This year the magic of the moment seems even more poignant with the beautiful solar eclipse taking place yesterday as well. I spent the morning sat out on the school field with my class of Drama pupils and we all commented on how ‘unusual’ the atmosphere felt as we bathed in the eerie light. Faeries associate their lavish celebrations at this time with youthfulness and fertility. Hares and rabbits are the animals particularly revered in March, and of course as we draw close to Easter, eggs are also a powerful symbolism. Pre-dating Christianity by thousands of years, eggs have always been decorated as a symbol of new life to mark Ostara. I for one have made sure that today I will be paying my respects to this wonderful Sabbat by spending time out in the open air, appreciating Mother Nature. I have just got in from a long run through the woodland near where I live and I breathed in every flower, plant and tree as I ran. My two dogs galloped beside me, and every faery in the vicinity probably scuttled for cover as they charged, ha ha! I just hope we didn’t knock down any of the bunting they’ll be pinning up for tonight’s big party. How I wish I could join them! Peace, love and light everyone 🙂
