World Book Day 2015

World Book Day 2015

Schools everywhere have celebrated World Book Day today and there have been some wonderful examples in the news of the creative hive of activity going on up and down the country. Horizon Community College in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, where children’s author Melanie J Firth works as a Performing Arts teacher, was no exception. The teachers themselves were asked to teach their lessons dressed as characters from their all-time favourite books and they had to read their students paragraphs from novels that had inspired them when they were younger.

Melanie said, “My own personal childhood favourites would have to be ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit.’ I read the whole mammoth tombstone of volumes when I was just ten years old. My Nannan introduced me to them and I fell in love with the way they instantly transported me into another exciting and magical universe. I should therefore really have come to school today dressed as a hobbit, but being the girlie girl I am, I just didn’t fancy putting fur on my feet and in my ears. A close and more modern second in favourites is the ‘Harry Potter’ series which I discovered as an adult, but read with the same awe and wonder as a child. I totally planned to come as Harry today and I had my whole outfit laid out ready; cape, glasses, Gryffindor top … But then everyone said to me, “There’s no way you can have your own series of books out about faeries, and then not be coming as a faery character on World Book Day!” So I didn’t want to be a disappointment and at the last minute I changed my costume idea and have come dressed as Rosie Quartz herself. All the many hundreds of children I teach Drama, said that they expected it, so I’m glad that I didn’t let them down. And I’ve thoroughly enjoyed walking around all day in my wings and glittery crown! It’s been a fantastic day and the children have really embraced the occasion and got into the spirit of celebrating the nation’s love of books.”
